Back up

I have been using a western digital USB drive to back up all my events. Recently I started using a new Western Digital My Passport Ultra USB drive however when it is connected to either an ION or Element before turning on the consoles it causes them to boot up extremely slow. Extremely slow. If I turn on a console without the new drive connected then after it boots up I plug in the new drive it takes an extremely long time to recognize the drive. The same drive works perfectly well on my desktop and laptop computers. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this.

  • Hi Jeff,

It sounds like the system is looking at the new drive and trying to determine if it can boot from it. We enable the functionality for booting from USB drives in our configuration for service needs. After some time the system determines it cant boot from it, it continues to boot normally.

Its also very likely that USB speed/boot order is playing a role in this. Depending on your hardware, there are slightly different setups and USB speeds.

Of course size of the USB drive and how many files will also impact this. I assume the new drive is larger in size than the older drive.

If you're interested, reach out to our Technical Services department, we have a few things we could walk through to try and improve this behavior.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Will do Matt. Thanks bunches. Yes the drive is larger. Someone asked me if it actually does boot when the drive is connected and I didn't know but today I let it run it's course and yes it does eventually boot. I think what you are saying makes total sense and I will call Tech.
