Connecting Ion to Master fader wings

There are two small screws that hold the plastic end caps on.  Remove the end caps on both the fader wing and the console.  You will see that there is some structural metal there that locks the two together.  Once they are locked together, they are held there by the same two small screws...

Would I carry it around that way.... Probably not. Especially with the 2x20 wing.  However, if you are moving it once every six months or so and you roll it around on a cart or the like... I don't think it would be too bad....

However, if they are separated, you will have to remove power to the fader wing separately.  

And just to be clear, the only wings you can use with Ion and Eos are the Universal Fader Wings.  The "Master Fader Wing" is a Congo jr product only.

Hi there

I'm currently touring an ion around the country.  As a result, the ion does get moved around a fair bit.  I prefer to have the wings connected together, as this means one less power adapter and one less cable running around the control area.  When traveling the desk, I do separate the fader wing from the console itself, mainly because the roadcase we had built for it is designed that way.

With regards to those little screws - I don't use them to lock the fader wing onto the main console.  The main reason for this being they would most likely get lost, so i have put them in a safe place.  I haven't found any problems with this as the desk and wing stay very well attached to each other without them.  Also makes packing up and setting up just that touch faster.

We strongly urge all wing users to use the provided screws to lock the wings and console together. While the connection is designed to be firm without screws, all it takes is a slight bump or an uneven surface to compromise the connection between the two. The wings are not intended to be hot-swapped, and should the data connection be broken, we can't guarantee how quickly the wing will come back online.  An intermittent USB connection can cause problems with all other USB devices on the system. So for safety sake, please use the screws.

I realize that it's not convenient in a touring situation, we can send you some spares if you'd like. :)

So I physically connected my wing to my Ion but am having a time figuring out the best way to flip the whole thing over to reinstall the screws!

I didn't think ETC would approve of not using the screws.  So far, the connection has been good without the use of screws and has not failed once.  Thanks for the info - I may reconsider the use of screws

That way all the 'fragile' bits are resting against something soft rather than against the hard table.

Don't roll it onto the back though - the Ion is a different shape to the wing and has all those connectors on the back!
