Apple Airport Express settings for iRFR

Can someone direct me to, or be willing to write out concise step-by-step instructions for setting up an Apple Airport Express for use with iRFR and a brand new Gio?  Have searched and found plenty of articles regarding network settings, but I have very little knowledge of all that IP, DNS, DHCP network stuff and I am having a very difficult time translating it to my situation.  Any help would be greatly appreciated! Let me know if you need more info.

  • Is your system using DHCP for IP addresses?  Or static IP addresses?  Let me know and I'll write it out for ya.

  • That would be awesome!

There is no networking connected to the system at this point. My intention is to connect the Airport to the network port 2 of the console and use it exclusively to for the iRFR, and to eventually connect a 4-port gateway to port 1. So I suppose it could be set up either way (?).

    THANKS!!

  • The party line from ETC is that you should use DHCP for IP addresses, but I (and many others) strongly disagree with this recommendation for a number of reasons that I can go into if you're interested.  In the meantime, I suggest this:

Edited to add: I would connect the Express to Port 1.  If you want to add a node later, you should add a simple network switch.  Keeping everything on Port 1 will simplify the configuration.  Generally, we use the second port for a redundant network, or for separating certain protocols.

    1) On the Gio:

    • •Exit to the shell, and click on Settings>Network.
    • •Make sure that "Obtain an IP automatically" is unchecked.  Set your IP address to 10.101.91.101.  Set your Subnet mask to 255.255.0.0.  Set your Default Gateway to 10.101.1.1.
    • •Scroll down and make sure that DHCP Service>Enable is unchecked.
    • •Click Accept, and restart your Gio.

    2) On the Airport Express:

    • •Do a factory reset on your Airport Express to make sure all of the settings are zero'd out.
    • •In the "Base Station" tab, give the Express a name and a reasonable password (which you'll use next time you need to log into the express and configure it).
    • •In the "Internet" tab, set the DHCP mode to "Manual" (or "Static"... I can't remember which option it gives you).
    • •Set the Express' IP address to 10.101.124.101.  Subnet mask 255.255.0.0.  Gateway (or Router) 10.101.1.1.
    • •In the "Wireless" tab, set Network Mode to "Create a Wireless Network", and give your network a name and a password.
    • •In the "Network" tab, set Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
    • •Under the "AirPlay" tab, turn all that junk off.  You don't need it.
    • •Press Update, and your express will restart.

    3) On your iPod/Phone/Pad:

    • •Go into Settings>WiFi.  Join the wireless network you just created
    • •Once you've joined it, click on the little "i" icon.
    • •Under IP Address, click on the "Static" option.
    • •Enter 10.101.125.101 as your IP address.   Subnet mask 255.255.0.0.  Gateway (or Router) 10.101.1.1.
    • •Press the button that takes you back to settings.
    • •Launch iRFR and enter the IP and Name of your Gio.  You should be all set.

If that doesn't work, you might phone Tech Support.  Tell them you want to set up a wireless network for your iRFR using static IP addresses.

  • Thanks for your help, Paul. I really appreciate this! I will mess with this next week.
