backing up Ion

I can 4 packets sent, 4 received, 0 lost. However no success from the ION to the laptop. I did a ping from the ION shell and it just kept running with no success.

I also switched network cable just in case the one I was using was bad. One question: does it have to be connected through a switch or can it be connected direct? Either way I could not get it to work, but wondered about that. My guess is direct.

I'd bet that Dan is on the right track. Jeff, I always stick to the static IP addresses listed here: https://www.etcconnect.com/Support/Articles/ETC-Network-IP-Addresses.aspx and I rarely have networking problems. Ignore the recommendation that you use DHCP. Static is the way to go.

Paul. I'm a little confused on your suggestion. I'm not using DHCP and I don't think anyone suggested it.

The ETC IP address webpage that I linked suggests using DHCP (repeatedly). I was just mentioning it in that context.

That depends on the hardware involved. Most 'current' network cards can auto switch the connections. While it's very common it is by no means universal.

Ok everyone. The battle is won. Thank you all for all your input. Combined I was able to finally connect tonight. Final solution: first of all shut off WiFi which I overlooked before. That through direct connect and switch did not work. I next connected through my wireless router (not using WiFi of course since it was shut off anyway) and it connected and synced immediately.
I talked with my boss today about using the addresses I am using from his original suggestion a few years back and he agreed with the comment about it being a range that should never be used and for good reason, however we used that address back then because it wasn't for WiFi or any external internet use anyway. It was to connect my laptop. But since I also use my iPhone to focus and tech and that is using WiFi then I am planning on switching to the recommended range anyway once I get through this show.
