Bug?: Element Color Picker

Currently working on an Element v2.3.3.
When I select a group of LEDs, change their color with the color picker, and select a new group of LEDs (which are in a completely different color from the first group), the color picker doesn't jump to the color of the new group. And when I attempt to adjust saturation using the Saturation bar, it jumps the second group to the color of the first group.
Using both "Group" and channel selection.
Feature? Bug? Anybody have a work around?
Thanks!

  • Hello!

What type of fixture are you trying to control?
Is there any overlap between the groups?

    Thank you,
  • They're custom Source 4 LED fixtures. We have a combination of first and second gen fixtures in the plot so I created a fixture with a dummy parameter in the white and lime slots respectively in order for the units to match.

And no overlap. The channels and groups that the color picker is functioning properly for are ColorSource Pars and VL880s, all using the profiles from the fixture library.

So far I'm thinking it either has to do with custom fixtures in general or this specific custom fixture.
The fan control parameter is also showing up as a Color parameter too...which seems a little odd to me but I could see some rationale for that.
  • that the fan is a color parameter is on purpose (so u can use color palettes to control it along with the color itself).
i guess your custom fixtures are the problem. the color picker on it's own can't handle white or lime. their behaviour is special cased into the fixture profiles. and this gets lost when you edit it...
  • I just tried creating the exact same fixture from scratch rather than copying the S4 LED profile and the color picker worked exactly how I would expect it to. So something funky happened with the profile or the way it interacts with the color picker when I copied and changed Parameter 2 to "Dummy".
  • So because I am removing that information from the profile, it no longer knows how to communicate the current color info to the color picker? That would make sense as to why a fully custom fixture worked rather than a partial custom fixture...interesting.
  • Why get rid of the lime and white parameters? Seems a waste. You could either use the rgb profile to have them "match" or hsi. I don't remember what the color picker will look like on hsi, but they will match in theory. Also editing the profile may not know what to do with other parameterside like amber and indigo.
  • I got rid of those parameters because we were mixing first gen and second gen fixtures in the same system. The color difference between the two generations is pretty significant for anything using either the white or the lime. When I removed them, it matched almost perfectly (still some slight difference if you paid close attention, but that could have resulted from the ED tubes we had in the 2nd gen fixtures as well)
HSI would be worth a shot, but I have a feeling that the colors would still be off because one fixture would be mixing with white, while the other would be mixing with lime. Even if they computers say they're the same, I feel like the physics might have something different to say.
    Thanks for the reply!
  • I agree that the issue is likely related to the edited fixture profile.
I also agree that it is worth giving HSI a shot to see if you can get a closer match- but it is usually best to run fixtures with their proper profiles and then create color palettes to help with quick color matching between fixtures.
  • Thanks Sasha. Given the short tech time we were given and the way the designer works, this seemed like a logical place to start. I'll definitely give things a shot if it comes up again though!
  • I've had a similar occurrence with a Nomad (2.3.3). Copying LEDs from one shows magic sheet to the new show. When selected in the new show the color picker didn't know the parameters of the fixture nor did the magic sheet display the fixtures current color. Because I was working on Nomad (without a rig plugged in) I don't know what the fixture would have been doing. My work around was to create a new show then merge "all" from my dysfunctional show into it. If I could recreate this my show files would be with ETC but I can't. I think we may see more of this on the forum - color picker/fixtures/magic sheets. I don't think your fixture edit was the problem.
  • Sorry, in trying to recreate through loading older versions of the shows I think maybe the magic sheets got ahead of the soft patch which completely explains what I was seeing.
