RDM over DMX

Hi ETC.

I'm looking to buy colour LED ellipsoidal units (yes, coloursource is an option).

Another local venue is running Coloursource, Ion and Net 3 products.  Their Ion has a Net 3 Concert button in the Maintenance Shell.

My (2) venues are Ion, but only DMX.  No Net 3, no Ethernet available.

How would I go about being able to RDM over DMX?

It needs to be 5 wire DMX, correct?

the RDM will play nicely with opto-repeaters?  there are a few in line....

Let me know what I need to buy / install.

Thanks.

Andrew

  • Hi Andrew,

DMX and RDM Standards both call for 3-wire cable with a 5pin Connector.

Pins 4 and 5 are not used for DMX or RDM.

Ion Consoles can communicate via RDM on their 2x local DMX Ports - the console may need a firmware update which can be done free of charge.

You plug the fixtures directly into the back of the console, and waa-laa RDM will work.

Unfortunately, all opto-repeaters, dmx splitters, mergers all need to be RDM-Versions, otherwise they chop all the

RDM Data out of the signal when they pass it on. You can contact the manufacturers of the individual opto-splitters if your particular models,

are RDM-Capable, or if they can get an update to make them so.

We also offer wireless DMX relays - ColorSource Relay - that will allow you to put RDM DMX wherever in your theater via Wireless DMX,

and then when the console goes off, and the DMX Signal is gone, the Relays turn off automatically, saving power to the LED Fixtures.
