Additional universes on Ion

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm looking to purchase an Ion based system in the very near future, although for the moment I'm still unclear on what is needed to add extra universes?

Ideally we need 4-6 univereses/2048 - 3072 channels.

How can I achieve this with the Ion? Could someone please list exactly what components/software is needed for this?

Also, what exactly is the difference between the Ion 1000 and Ion 1500/2000/and so on????

It's just a bit unclear for me at the moment, would appreciate some clairty!

Thanks very much

  • the numbers tell you what license the ion has, so an ion 1500 has a license of 1536 outputs.
just to make sure you know: ion counts output addresses, no matter in how many universes they're distributed. so 1536 means three full universes or 6 half universes or one full universe plus two with 400 used addresses each plus 8 universes with 28 addresses.
you can get prices through your local ETC dealer
  • Hi Andrew,

Difference between Ion 1000/1500/2000/ was just the number of outputs (rounded down.) that the Ion had

when it was manufactured. Ion 1000 has 1024 outputs (possible dmx addresses).

Ion 1500 has 1536 outputs. Ion 2000 has 2048 outputs.

In order to get more outputs, you can purchase one or more 512-Output Upgrades to get more outputs for your console.

Once you purchase an output upgrade, you will be send a code that you enter into the Ion in the Setup Menu in Shell.

After entering this code, your Ion console will then have a higher maximum amount of outputs.

No hardware upgrade or modification is required. All Ion consoles can be upgraded up to a maximum of 3072 outputs,

and newer Ions can be upgraded to a total of 6144 Outputs. Using your Serial Number, we can let you know how many

max. outputs your console can have. Please contact your dealer for pricing and have your Serial Number ready.

    ready.

  • You, of course, also need some physical ports to output those universes. The Ion has two such DMX ports on the back of the desk itself. Other ports can be added over the network, using either ETC's gateways/nodes or sACN compatible nodes from a 3rd party.
You can have more ports than universes, having several ports, in different locations around your venue, outputting the same universe. Or, as Ueli said, you can have many more physical universes than the output limit of your desk, and only use part of each universe.
