Flying with an Ion in original packaging

Am I crazy to consider flying with an Ion in original packaging as a checked bag on an airline?  They don't offer any standard or additional liability for "computers." And I don't have access to a flight case. (Which yes, I would agree is the best option.)

Has anyone done this?

I'll probably get scared and just pay the $200 to UPS for shipping + insurance instead.

Thoughts?

  • I have found that with tool boxes, because of the insane cost of insurance above $300 or so per checked bag, that shipping my tools FedX 2day a few days before is often cheaper...and less to deal with in the airport. You do not know how often I have had to argue that a coffin lock key (used to open work boxes) is a key and not a tool...please Mr TSA don't take it away...again
