switch for lighting network

Hi All,

I'm looking to spec a new rack-mount network switch for our lighting network, as ours is about 12 years old.  The system consists of a Gio, 4 x 96 Sensor "Classic" racks (is "classic" the term - they aren't "+" or "Sensor3") and a number of Net2 network nodes.

Are there any suggestions about what we'd need in a switch?

Thanks

  • Hi Benjamin,

There are a few things to bare in mind when buying a switch. Normally ETC recommends unmanaged switches as they are generally the safest and easiest to use. It's actually very hard to find a rack mounted unmanaged switch though, particularly if you require PoE. The next models up a generally called 'pro' and they often have certain technologies which actually hinder lighting networks and you can't turn off.

I use a range of managed switches from HP/Aruba but which work out of the box for lighting networks without needing any further configuration. If you search for either HP 2530 or Aruba 2530 (they're jointly branded) you can pick up anything between 8-48 ports. They also do gigabit and 10/100 models.

    Cheers

    Dan
