How can I search fixture profiles?

How can I search fixture profiles to find the one that matches or is closest to a fixture I have?  The only way I know is to load and examine each one individually, an incredibly tedious process.  For example, how can I find all 13 channel profiles with RGBW and 16-bit pan/tilt.  I have a fixture with an unknown manufacturer and very little info on the patch, but I know it has 8 and 13 channel modes and I have some idea what the channels do, but I will have to experiment to determine exact behavior.  If I could see similar fixtures, it would help.

  • The search function in Patch is pretty helpful at narrowing down the field.

To get really accurate in your search means looking in the Fixture Release Notes PDF. I wrote a not-quite-perfect exporter a while back that converts it to Excel, which improves the filtering options like: Footprint in (8,13) and Channels contains (1:Pan, 2:Tilt, 3:Intens, 4:Red, 5:Green, 6:Blue, 7:Amber, 8:White).

Before you ask... no, I'm not prepared to share and support the converter. With the new search function it's not really necessary.

  • Thanks for the input. What source file were you exporting to Excel? That sounds like the file with the info that I could search. Using the search function in patch only finds things in the title, not in the patch itself, and still requires looking at the details of each individually.
  • The document used to ship with the PC and probably Mac clients and was called Fixture_Release_Notes.pdf. It doesn't appear to be included with 2.4 and may have gone away in one of the 2.3 releases, which is probably for the best since it was getting huge.
