Why did submaster softkeys get taken away in 2.4?

I have an Ion and was used to having some of the properties of submasters as softkeys. Now they are gone and only appear on the screen. Why? I can understand if those softkeys got assigned to something else, but they are just blank.

  • There are now a lot more possibilities than before, and the interface has moved to be consistent across target types. You'll see for instance that cue lists now have the same type of configuration screen. You would miss out on all the other functionality if only a few options were left on these softkeys.

  • Then why not keep what was on the softkeys before and then have access to all of the other content on the screen via one of the softkeys? A simple one-handed operation has now been changed to multiple operations involving a softkey and selecting options from a screen (and if you don't happen to have a touch screen a mouse as well). It doesn't make sense to have softkey slots sitting open when they could be used for something useful.

The softkeys I used most often were {Fader} and {HTP}. There is still plenty of room for those.
  • Well, partly because some of the functionality has actually changed so accessing it via a softkey doesn't really make sense such as Priority. The number of softkeys are very limited, so how would you chose which functions to put there and which not? What actually ends up happening is that users don't discover a feature because they never find it. Now everything you can do is presented to you.
