running nomad as backup

hello, i am programming a show that i want to use a nomad as a backup console for, i am just wondering how i go about doing this, the primary will be a ion and the nomad will be running on a dedicated pc. this is the first time i have ran a backup desk and don't know where to start? any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Alex

  • the first thing you need to make nomad available as backup is a nomad license dongle. since the size of this license dongle also affects the available dmx address output of the primary (in your case the ion console), your license dongle for the nomad backup needs at least the same size as your current system. if your current show uses 950 dmx addresses, you also need this size of license for your backup (they come in sizes 256, 512, 1024, 1536, and so on until 6144) which means you would need 1024 in this example.
when you have that you basically only need a network switch so you can connect the two consoles by RJ45, give them IP addresses in the same subnet and then start one as primary and one as backup. if backup doesn't find the console the first time, click Troubleshoot, manually choose the console from the list and click Change Master. Done.

this applies if your primary outputs the data through network. if you output through local dmx (the 5pin connectors at the back of the console) you have to make additional arrangements. but if you output through network, you should be set.
  • thank you this really helped, already have a nomad license dongle from previous shows so this shouldn't be too difficult
