Subwing Killing Me

Hey Folks,

This weekend's first show since Dance Schools was a mildly famous guitar virtuoso requiring much more subtle lighting control than the previous month.  I had the ten Eos faders loaded as Subs, with six more subs on our 10x2 Fader Wing.  Very simple and foolproof.  Unfortunately, I had a very annoying problem with my Fader Wing Subs.  It seems that the handles were having trouble keeping control of their Subs.

Here's my best description:  When the Subs are happy, they show solid green LED.  When the Sub is at a different level than the handle, the LED blinks and is unresponsive to the handle until the handle returns to that exact percentage.  Well I was getting blinking LEDs at the drop of a hat.  Easily 75% of the times I tried to move Sub handles, one or more would leave a Sub behind.

Imagine starting a ten second manual crossfade between two systems on Subs.  Your eyes on the stage, you see system A come up but after five seconds, you realize that System B isn't going down.  You look down, see a blinking light, your handle is at about 35% but the Sub level on the LCD is 87%.  You glance up to notice the half-executed pile of mud you've gotten stuck on stage.  Now all you can do is take that fader to what looks like about 87% and wiggle it around until it picks up control again.

Like I said, this was happening a lot, sometimes four at a time.  Has anyone else experienced this.  It didn't seem so bad during Dance Schools but I was slamming them around a lot faster then.  I ended up just using those faders on another page of the Eos which was no fun as I hadn't planned for it.

Speaking of Fader Pages.  I would like to repeat my wish for Fader Pages on the Direct Selects.  I want to be able to label them and go from one to another with one finger.  This could be with a seperate section of DSs or just Macros.  Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to change pages on the Wing without also changing pages on the Eos.

 Just some notes,  B

  • We have been experiencing the same issue with our fader wings (we have 3).  We narrowed it down to the fact that we had our sub wings plugged directly into the console, which was set up as back-up, (the primary being the RPU).  If we plug the fader wings directly into the RPU (primary) or change the console to primary and RPU to back-up the problem goes away.

At this point we have settled with buying a powered USB extension and running the fader wings off of the RPU.  Of course we lose the ability to change fader pages with-out having to walk across the booth to press fader page on the RPU, but we we really haven't run into this problem seeing as we have 3 fader wings.

We are hoping that ETC works this problem out soon though.

  • Bryan,

Thanks for the pointer.  We do have the wing plugged into the backup.  I'll try your solution.

  • A couple of ideas....

Are the subs on your fader wing the same as your subs on the eos faders.  If they are, they are probably conflicting with each other

Other ideas - could a indipendent or excludive setting help?

    Cheers

Brent, what version of the software are you using?  We've seen some issues in the past, and have continued working out the slider coordination issues on multiconsole, but we haven't seen anything as of recently.  I'll have our testers take a look at this as well.

  • I'm running 1.4.1.  I'm gonna play around with plugging into the master today and let you know.

Also- This didn't kill me, but last week where it would have been beneficial to use the wing with an OLE running as client.  I figured on about a fifty fifty chance of it working just like any USB device.  I lost.  Should I have expected that?  Would it have worked on the RVI?
