Write Protect

I have a customer who would like to be able to write protect a file.  They have a rep plot and basic patch that they work from all the time.  They would like to be able to save a desk setup as "Default" and then be able to not let anyone write over this.  I know that security settings are forthcoming (1.5?) and am just wondering if something like this will be part of the offering?

If not, is there a way to do this?  I am guessing that I could take the file to a PC offline and make it read only, but I don't know how the OS will react to that....

Any thoughts?

  • I'm not a big fan of locking files and not being able to unlock them.  Operators should be competent enough to not have to goto this measure.  That said, having worked in a large multi-venue complex where you have multiple operators, and often having different operators each day in some venues, standard files have been accidentally over-written in the past.

Best suggestion I can offer at the moment would be, firstly, make multiple backups in multiple places.  Secondly, get a USB key that has a write-protect switch on it and lock it that way.  If you are really really sure you never want to change the file and you are worried that some numpty will over-write your locked file, you can always break the switch offf (eek!).  A less extreame measure could be to put a cable tie around the key so the switch cannot be easily switched to the un-locked position.

    Hopefully some food for thought....

    cheers

  • All good suggestions.

What if you have auto save turned on and don't save the show with a new file name soon enough, then you have just over-written your file without necessarily meaning to do so...

Ideally, unlock of a specific file could be done if you were of a high enough log in level, but that is a question for Derek or Anne,  or just something for the wish list,  I guess....
