Unpatching Address

Hi

I've noticed that when unpatching by address, using the syntax [address @ enter] it patches the address to Chan 0.

Is there a way to unpatch an address and not have it patch to chan 0,  The main problem I have with this behavior is the window that shows which addresses are in use, and which are free is not accurate, as addresses patched to chan 0 appear as being "in use"

Cheers

  • This could also be helped if the default patch state was every address unpatched on the Ion. I have also experienced that the patching to channel 0 is a bit frustrating. Is there also a way to remove a type form patch when an address have been unpatched? Mainly for those of us who feel a bit daunted by all those red exclamation points :)
  • Hey guys.  The default patch was a specific request from Ion users.  In the future, we will be adding this as an option on a new file open.

Brent, we will remove items patched to channel zero from the patch flexi-state.  Wasn't really that big a deal until we added the default patch (a butterfly flaps its wings..... :-)

It is also possible to delete the channel.  If you unpatch it (or patch to channel 0, as it were), you can still set levels for the channel.  If you delete it, you cannot.

    Hope that helps!

  • If you do not want the 1 to 1 patch you can use the clear patch function.

In the browser select Clear. Then press the Clear Patch button. This will give you an empty patch.

  • Tanks all for your replies.  The main scenario where I use it is transferring a show from one venue to another and wanting to unpatch all channels and enter a new softpatch.

I realise I can go [ch 1 thru 500 @ enter] and this will unpatch chans from addresses.  The downside to this is any channel that didn't exist in the range will now show as a dimmer chan that is unpatched.  eg - show chans are 1 > 14, 21 > 25, 31 > 35, 41 > 45, 51 > 55, 61 > 63, etc etc.  After doing a range unpatch, all the chans that are not used (and don't exist in the show) now do exist, which then means the patched chan and show chan flexi state show a whole pile of unwanted chans.  To clean this up, I then have to go through and delete all unwanted chans (yawn)

Could it be possible that [chan @ enter] will unpatch the chans for existing channels, and ignore chans that don't exist.  Thoughts?

    Cheers

  • Hey Brent... I think the best thing is for us to exclude channels patched to 0 from patched channel flexi states.   And they currently shouldn't show up in "show channels" at all, unless they've data stored in cues.   Will that work??

  • Hi Anne.  I think that will work.  Just to confirm what your proposing is chans with are set to "dimmer" and have no address patched to them will not show up in patched chans flexi state?  That sounds like it should be fine and dandy to me.  It's also the address display that appears in the CIA in the patch screen that shows an address as being used because it is patched to chan 0.  The other problem I find with this is when I go to patch a chan to an address that I know is free, but has been patched to chan 0, I get a warning that "address is already in use".

Also, I find the red !! in the patch screen not very helpful, mainly due to the fact that if a channel is assigned a type of dimmer and isn't patched to an address, then the ! will appear.  If I do a range unpatch, and chans that didn't previously exist in the range now have a type of "dimmer" and are showing the !  I just don't seem to find it particularly useful with it's current behaviour.

Finally, on a side note - I just tried deleting a channel from patch.  Am I correct in assuming that this action should also remove any data stored in cues, subs, and other record targets?  When I "about" the chan i just deleted, the console says the chan is still used in a sub.  The deleted chan also still appears in the show chans flexi state

Apologies for the long rant - Cheers :-)

  • Hey Brent.  That's correct.  If its not patched to a channel it won't show up in any flexi-state (well, when we fix that, that is).  Also, I've got a note to make sure that addresses patched to channel zero are excluded from re-patch warnings.    Agree about the red !.  Have an idea, but want to talk to the developers about it.  More soon.

A deleted channel should be removed from all record targets.  Will look into the sub issue.   And it should clearly also be removed from show channels.

    Thanks much!

  • My $0.02 on this:

My House Patch has 300 dimmers.  Not all are used by lights/control channels.  These are not patched, but they are "type"d as a dimmer, with location in the room, etc.  So the Ion thinks they are active, and gives me the exclamation mark.

My preference would be for address @ Enter to contain other information, without a control channel, but still be listed as Unused, without the exclamation mark.

I have noticed that when repatching the house channels/dimmers, that if I change 1 existing dimmer to a new channel, I get the confirmation warning.  If I do a multiple change of existing dimmers to channels, I don't get a warning.  V1.4.2.

    Thanks.
