Silly issues from a new Ion user...

I am about to install a new Ion in my venue, and I am struggling with what to do about the monitors.  I am curious what others have.  What type of monitors do you all use?  What are the pros/cons of touchscreens?  Do many people use them?  I am looking at monitors, and most of what I am seeing out there are widescreen.  Is this bad?  I know that 1280 is the min. resolution, but is going higher better?  What do you all suggest?  Also, do both monitors need to be DVI?  What about monitors attached to a RVI?

Next, what is the significance of the scroll lock?  I have seen this on alot of posts on various sites, but I am confused about what scroll lock does and/or why it is so important...

Any input is apreciated...

  • Hi there

With monitors, I have 2 monitors.  One is an LCD, the second is a touchscreen.  Personally, I find the touchscreen useful and much faster to program with instead of having to reach for the mouse each time I want to select a filter, change what parameters are displayed in table view, etc etc.  That said, if you're not going to be using moving lights much, alot of other buttons that appear on touchscreens are also mirrored on the softkeys so you can get away with out one.  It all comes down to personal preference.

Again, I'd recommend getting a touchscreen and an LCD screen.  The advantage of having one touch screen is you can access touch functions on both screes via the [Swap] key.  Make sure both screens are of the same size / resolution, otherwise this function won't work correctly.  You will also be unable to use the [expand] function on ION if both screens are not the same.

Don't know much about the widescreen, but I don't see any real benefit.  They'll just take up a bit more room perhaps?  Hopefully someone else can chime in here with a bit of extra info.

Regarding resolution - 1280 is definatly the way to go as it will display all available info on the screen.  Smaller resolutions mean that the end of some of the columns in the cue list display will drop off the edge of the screen.  Both monitors don't need to be DVI.  The console has 2x DVI outputs (via the Y-cable) and also 1x VGA output.  So 1 monitor can be VGA and 1 DVI, or both DVI.  You cannot use DVI > VGA adapters on ION as the DVI outputs only carry digital signal.

Can't comment on RVI and monitors as I have never used or seen one.

Scroll Lock on the Console:  Needs to be on to use and external keyboard for console commands.   If scroll lock (on the console) is off, then entries from the keyboard will be posted directly to the command line (ie: with Scroll Lock OFF: if you press z on the keyboard, "z" will be posted to the command line.   With scroll lock ON: "Record Only" would be posted to the command line instead)

Scroll lock is also handy when scrolling through the cuelist, patch, etc.  When scroll lock is on, pressing the up or down arrow will advance to the next entry.  When scroll lock is off, up or down arrow will act the same way as page up/page down works on your PC.

Hope the info helps you out a bit.  Happy programming!

    Cheers
