What time is it?

When trying to change the time of day on Ion, I got the following message: "It appears that you are setup as a Net3 Services SNTP Client.  That means you will receive time and date updates over the newtork, so changing the time and date manually will only be temporary."

What does that mean?  Is there somewhere else in the system that I should be setting TOD?  Also, I noticed the whatever time I enter into my Ion, after a minute or so is reflected on my Unison touchscreens.  Is this to be expected?

I have just moved to Ion from and Emphasis Server I am concerned that something is not configured correctly, or maybe I am paranoid...

  • From what I understand from yuor post the ION console is set up to receive its time settings from somewhere else.  In this case Unison is the one telling it what time it is.  When you change the time on your ION you are telling the rest of the Unison system to change its time as well, but since the ION is not set as the time server the Unison processor we re-assert its control over the system once every so often. Unison does not send the time data all of the time, just once in a while...every hour or so I think, but that is why you get the message telling you that the change is only temporary....it will hold until Unison tells the console and stations what time it is again.  We let Unison have control because Unison and the console would fight to have control of the time server and that can cause some bad things....basically its easier to turn the time server function off on the Ion and aviod trouble.  Hope this Helps

    It is the other way around...Ion is changing my Unison time.

    Hi.  I'd suggest turning off the network time sever thingo (can't remember the technical term for it, so that will have to do)

    When you are in the settings page in the ion shell, there should be a box near where you set the time.  This box should read something along the lines of "use sntp server" or something like that.  Uncheck this box.  Hopefully that will make the problem go away.

    FYI, as jruth explained, sntp is a time sync thing.  This ensures everything on the network has the same time set.  For this to work, one network device is set as the time server, and everything else receives it's time from the "server".  I've not really used it so my knowledge is rather limited, but if you turn off network time in the Ion, then it will stop looking to receive it's time from elsewhere.

    If you do want to use this feature, hopefully someone else here on the forums can help, or call tech support.

    What I normally teach users is that there are two settings. Server and client. If there are multiple devices on a network, I will absolutely turn the time server on as all the devices will then have the same time stamp. Whichever console is your master console is what I would set up as the Time Server. All the other devices on the network would then be Clients for the time server.

    Do you just have an ION console? Any Net3 Gateways? I would recommend that you might even turn Net 3 Services off completely if you only have an Ion console on the network.
