EOS Family (Ion) with Artemis Bridge Simulator

I work in a theatre with a permanent 5 projector setup (1 back wall front, 4 floor). During our free time, we've been playing Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator on the big screen. Since we're a theatre, we have a full lighting rig that is fully networked (EOS Family with two full dimmer racks and DMX nodes).

This game actually has DMX capabilities built into it to enhance the experience. More info here;

Is there anyway to get these two systems to play together?

Based on what I've found, It seems like it'll be difficult since ETCNet3 for DMX communication is proprietary, so i'd have to bypass the networking and use a separate USB DMX controller direct to the lighting instruments.

A 3rd party expansion of the DMX abilities of Artemis is available, and greatly increases the DMX capabilities;

  • Technically the full ETC NET3 suite of protocols does include some proprietary stuff, but the actual transport of DMX level information is done using sACN (ANSI E1.31). This is an industry standard protocol that anyone can implement. It does sound like Artemis currently only supports regular DMX using a USB interface, but it might be worth asking the authors if they'd be willing to add sACN support to their product.

    In the meantime, you can still use your network infrastructure with only a minor change: you need a Gateway with a port configured as a DMX input. That plus the USB to DMX interface should allow you to use Artmenis to control your lights.

    Thank you for your response! I believe we have Net3 DMX/RDM Two-Port Gateways in our grid. If I take your meaning correctly, you're suggesting that we plug into a node that has one of its ports configured as an input? This would be configured over RDM? I've only seen us reconfigure our network once when we had a technician out to our place to add another universe. Are there online resources you'd suggest for programming using RDM? If not, I'm happy to give our resident tech a call. Last time he was out we'd actually asked him to come back out to do some training, and this might be a good, non-time sensitive way to learn more about our own system.

    It seems that plugging in to our ION console directly from our USB to DMX would be simpler, but this post;

    Suggests that it would not work. Just want to confirm this.

    Neither of the ports on the Ion can be configured as an input, so you would want to use one of your Gateways instead. The software tool for configuring them is Concert and can be found here: www.etcconnect.com/.../Software.aspx

    It's pretty easy to use, so you may just want to install it and experiment a little. Of course, now that you're settling in and getting used to your space, it might indeed be a good time for some more in-depth training on how all of the pieces fit together.

    Thanks for your help! I'm playing with an older ENTTEC USB to DMX we own today to try and see if I can get DMX out. Then I'll try Concert out and try to get them talking to the lights. Thanks again!
