Feature Request

I would like to have the ability to lock out certain features of the console like Patch, Macros, etc. We have several schools where students like to do as much damage as possible. Could this be a future feature?

Tony

  • There are many "profile" and "user" lockout requests and some of it is on the list. One thing to remember is that the show file is never overwritten. You can always reload a previous version which has a time stamp to get out of something where people have made unauthorized changes. Not sure when any of that will make it to an update.
  • The whole point is that you're teaching them, right? Shouldn't they have access to all of the features? You want them making mistakes at school, not once they're out in the real world. Patch especially. If you're not capable of using patch correctly, you're not capable of being a programmer.
  • Tony's request is valid, because unfortunately not every school is a School for Technical Theater, and sometimes, there is only a Drama Teacher who doesn't know much about technical aspects, and where a ETC Dealer came and commissioned the site, and got it running, and then if someone comes in and changes aspects of the console settings like the patch, then the Drama Teacher and the students might not be able to get the console back to a working state.

I will agree with Andrew though that special access levels is not the best solution here, rather its best to have created a base show file with all of the patch

and maybe general submasters, presets, palettes, snapshots and macros saved, and then build each event from that showfile. Then, if the students mess the showfile up so badly, then you can just open the base showfile and start over.

Its also good to save your specific show files multiple times a day during programming/tech rehearsals so that if a student messes something badly up you can go open a last saved verson of that show to before the mess up point.

  • Thanks for the responses. The problem isn't the students or staff we have trained, it is the ones we haven't. We have coaches and other staff that think they can program lights because they do it at their church. Unfortunately in our district there are 2 theatre techs to service 46 schools and also run our main stage with 600 events a year. So being able to limited access would solve some problems that arise from non trained individuals and would help stop problems, especially when we can't get to a school to fix a problem someone has created.

  • I see. In that case, in addition to what Andrew and Corey have said, make sure you make backups of your current show file and your base show file to an external drive that you keep. There's nothing to prevent people from deleting them from the hard drive and/or replacing them with something else.
