Long Distance Fader Panel

I am about to be a VERY happy Ion owner. (order could be placed as soon as today) The one question I have is:

The Ion is going to be a replacement for a Strand 300 series console. Our space was retrofitted at the time of purchase pulling CAT5 to the back stage, which allowed for an SM panel to be back stage.

My question is this, can I run a 2x10 fader panel backstage using a USB over CAT5 adapter?

  • I am sure as long as your adapter works like a normal usb, that it should work. Be sure that the wall wart for the faders is plugged in, and the usb is plugged into the console before turning the console on.

However, I would like to take you one further... when you register the console you get a usb dongle which allows you to run the client software on another computer and essentially be a designers remote. So, you could take your cat5 cable, get a hub and another computer for backstage, and have a fully functional console backstage. You can plug your faders into that computer as well. If you take it a step even further, you could get an X-keys pro, and program it to have all of the same buttons that the Ion has.

    Congrats on the new console!

  • I would just like to add to this by saying that you would do well to use a computer on stage that has internal USB so that your client dongle is 'locked" safe inside the computer. This will prevent it from getting stolen or broken. I believe that you can still plug a fader wing into a computer running client software.
