Gadget II not working Windows 8.1

We just got a Gadget II for our theatre, we are trying to get it setup on a laptop so we can run some lights without our ETC board.

I have ETCnomad installed (downloaded ETC_EosFamily_v2.6.2.9.0.11.zip) and installed it on my laptop running Windows 8.1. When I connect the Gadget II I can see the serial number in the Local I/O window. I have checked the drivers for the GII and they're fine.

I've read quite a few threads on here and tried everything that I have read to get this working with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

that sounds all good. what is not working? you connected the DMX cable to the gadget, you're running Nomad and press Go and nothing happens?

Nothing happens when I send a command to the lights. I have been watching the LED on the G2 and it is always solid green, it isn't blinking as the instructions say it should when it gets a command.

We also have a Win10 laptop having the same problem.

Is there a way to test the G2 without nomad?

do you have set the outputs of the gadget to the universes you patched to? and in patch, select a channel that's not working. have a look at the the field Interface. what does it say there?

It is patched to the correct universe, however we just noticed when in patch Interface is set as disabled and it will not let us select DMX.

you started the software in offline mode. you need to start it as Primary. do you have an ETCnomad dongle? this contains the license and is necessary to allow the nomad software to output:

No we do not. When we purchased the G2 all we got was the G2 itself.

that's not enough. the gadget provides the physical connectivity, but not the license. that's what you need the ETCnomad dongle for.

Thanks, we were under the impression the software was open source and didn't know (nor were we informed when we ordered the g2) that we needed a software key.

The software is indeed for free (not open source) and can be used free of charge as an offline editor, so you can make changes to your showfile while not at a console.
And the reason why this might not have come up when buying the Gadget (just guessing) is that it can be used in other situations as well, like to extend the number of physical outputs of a console. And since the console already has a dongle that is not an issue there.
