Well made Magic Sheets with Focus Palettes, Color Palettes, and Beam Palettes with intensity on faders has been the way that I do it. You have to find the setup that works best for you. I suggest making Magic Sheets and rehearse to a song you like and seeing how you work. Good Luck.
i work with multiple cuelists, e.g. a color cuelist per fixture type or section of your rig. and x2 subs with an effect and set the two faders to FX size and FX rate. last but not least the Manual Time Faders (filtered down to category) to change the speed of manual changes. which i mostly do with direct selects.
