midi notes and MSC are two different flavours of midi. afaik Ableton doesn't support MSC, but it does support midi notes.

you could either convert the midi notes to MSC e.g. with QLab. or you could make the element listen to midi notes. the downside of feeding midi notes directly to the element is that you have to define what the console should do with the notes. that would be simpler with MSC where the console does the work for you.

So let’s go with the scenario that I’m feeding midi notes directly to the board. I have a midi note in ableton above the audio track for every cue that I have. I have my usb to midi plugged in.

What would I then have to do

to configure midi notes input you open the Show Control Tab (Tab 11).

create a new event list by typing
[1] [/] {Type}{Network}{External} [Enter]

then create an entry (called event) within the list (called event list) for each midi note by typing
[2] {Action}{Cue}[3] [Enter]
[MoreSK]{MIDI String} then in the CIA {NoteOn} and choose the Note, the Octave and Channel and click {OK} (bottom left).

you would do this for every midi note you're expecting.

you could do the following:

have a midi note at the beginning of the song. this midi note starts a macro in Element that then starts internal timecode. think of this as a stopwatch. Element can be taught to fire certain cues at certain times of the stopwatch.

advantages: quicker than defining each midi note's reaction in Element and you don't need additional hardware or software.
downside: if you stop the music in ableton, Element will not realize and simply continue.

I like where this is going. Can you give me some details on this method. Unless it was an emgency I would never have to stop the song. Also more on the configuring the midi notes. Sorry if I’m ignorant but I’m totally new to midi so if you would like almost like a step by step would help troumendouly

a midi note looks like this:
90 01 7F

9= note on
0= channel 1
01 number of the note, corresponds to C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C and so on
7F velocity (ignore that)

in ableton i'm sure you have to choose which note to send. and in the show control tab you have to make the console wait for that note. no idea how ableton does midi note configuration.
