LED fixture not changing color in one cue only

Running an Element with a smattering of different LED wash fixtures and came along a curious problem I can’t figure out, hoping you all can assist.

I have one LED fixture that works fine EXCEPT if I am in a specific cue in the show. While I am in that cue I can change the intensity but not the color, which does not match the color saved into the cue (the tombstone says it should be R21 but what is onstage is a deep magenta). In other cues for the same show I am able to change the color as desired and it performs as it should.

I assume this is operator error but I honestly am at a loss as to what parameter could have been set to disallow color changes just in this one cue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Does sound quite weird but check the fixture is not in a different mode ie number of channels to what you have it patched as. As if so it might be picking up some DMX from the address of the next fixture and often the higher channels on LED fixtures are colour mode macros, so if the next fixture is at a particular intensity it could tell it to switch to a particular colour.

Once had a really baffling one with a moving light that would randomly spin around and point somewhere and then move back to where it should have been, it would do it about once in an hour or two. Eventually found that its patch profile was too short and another fixture was overlapping its DMX range and the last channel was the fixture reset and so if that next fixture sent full on that channel for 10 seconds it did a reset. Had me baffled for ages and was about to see if I could send the fixture back.
  • Also when in the cue and its misbehaving go into the Moving light control and check its not got a colour mode selected, which could have got recorded into the cue and can overide the colour picker colour.

That is probably the more likely problem than patch being wrong length.
  • Mike,

Thank you for the suggestions. I tend to think the ML control is likely the culprit - the show file archive I made when the show opened doesn't show anything awry, but it's possible this got mucked up since then. I'm doubtful DMX is the issue, the fixture in question (K9 Pup) appears to only have one operation mode (6 channel) but that's certainly something to look out for in the future!

Will post back after I've taken a look at the show file that is currently in the console. Thank you for the help!
