ION Patch Import Issues - Resolved

Our Board: Ion (newest software)

We have a show file originally imported from an Obsession II. There are MANY different situations in which we lose the entire cue list or parts of it upon dealing with the importing of anything.

 Some examples:

  • Clearing the patch erases the timings and values of all the NIPs in all the cues in the show (re-importing just a cue list from a previous ION version of the show does nothing)
  • Importing an ASCII patch from Lightwright erases the entire cue list
  • Importing just a patch or just a palette from another (ION) version of the show erases the entire cue list

 

Any help would be appreciated.

  • (After much experimentation) All these things happen with show files completely new and unrelated to our Obsession file. Any time we import a patch from a show file - whatever cue list we have in our original file dissapears. When we tried and import only a cue list (again from a custom made test show file), this time the cue list changed, but the patch (which we had altered), changed as well to match the patch of the file we were opening (which we didn't want, since we only selected CUES to import).

     

    What's going on?

     

    PS: In the last example, the board changed the title of the show/file from "Test 2" to "Untitled"

    We were bone-heads. We were trying to OPEN these files instead of IMPORTING them. In our defense, however, the manual is extremely unclear about importing and how partial opening will replace everything instead of adding to.

    So sorry about the confusion.  We've been contemplating changing "Import" to "Merge"... that might make it more clear.

    But glad to know you got it sorted.

    That might help - though just adding a clearer segment in the manual would help millions too.

    Also - a suggestion from our board op:

    when opening or importing a file, there is no indication after you click on the file name, which file you are actually opening. If you made a mistake and clicked on the wrong file, you wouldn't know until the open/import had completed. So, instead of having WOULD YOU LIKE TO IMPORT/OPEN THIS FILE? have WOULD YOU LIKE TO IMPORT/OPEN <FILE NAME HERE>?

    It's a simple thing, but would make the opening/importing process much easier.

    Here is another pertinent tidbit-

    Say you are working on Show A, and you decide to Import an element of Show B.  Your current show will still say "Show A" over the CIA, but if you Save (not Save As) your show will now be saved as Show B. 

    Whenever you Import something from another show, remember to Save As the file you want to remain working on.

    I'm pretty sure this is still true...
