Groups with tombstones

Hey All,

I'm still finding my way around the ion. I still find myself "thinking the expression way".

I have a question on groups. I hit {group group} and that takes me to the group display, but it is not the usual tombstone type display you see  for a cue for instance. Any way to change that? I also notice offset has disappeared when in group display, although it is still possible to type it in.

I also expected that {blind group} would put me in the same display I describe above, but it will put me in the blind mode for the cue and then select the group.

Having a the visuals would have made programing 30 image 85 a bit easier. http://kinoflo.com/Lighting%20Fixtures/Image/Image.htm

Thanks, Jim

  • Jim, there are a number of differences between groups and other record targets.  This is because groups are simply channel collectors (they have no parameter data associated with them).

The group list index is organized for efficiency.  Groups are only ordered channel lists.  So, by showing them the way we do, you can easily compare one group to the next.  There is very little paging involved.

Pressing the blind button always defaults you to cue blind. [Group] [n] [enter] selects a group in that cue.  That is the same syntax you use to change the blind display to another record target.   (Color Palette n enter).  Therefore, were we to combine the group display with the blind display, the desk would have no way of knowing if you were trying to select a group within the current blind record target, or change to the group display.  Does that make sense?

What software version are you running?  We have no recollection of the offset key not being present in the group list index.

  • And to add to what Anne said - since Groups contain no intensity information like they do in Expression, there really is no need for a blind display of the Group object. The Group list shows all the pertinent info about the Group (the list of channels, and in what order they were originally selected).

    Make sense?

  • I don't know the version of the software off the top of my head, I'll let you know when we land in the studio next week, we're out on locations now.

I understand that groups do not contain intensities and the current display makes sense, most of the time. It just would have been easier for me to get what I wanted if there was a channel display for groups. Just channel buttons with no intensities.

I was creating groups for 30 kinoflo image 85, each had 8 channels one for each bulb.  I was making groups for all units one bulb, all units 2bulbs, all units 3 bulbs etc, and other variations. It just would have been easier to click the channels than to type them in.

The other thing is that it is inconsistant with the rest of the GUI.  This is probably not an issue that will come up often but I hope you can see my point.

    Jim
