CXI's and Calibration

Using the color picker for manufacturer colors is not yielding very accurate results. I haven't had time to try and calibrate the CXI's, but will calibrating help since CXI's are a 2 string mixing system and they use partial frames? Reading about the scroller calibrate function sounded like it was mainly for standard scrollers to ensure the color stays centered.

  • Hi there... the scroller calibration tool is, in fact, geared toward standard scrollers.   The CXI is something of a problem from a matching standpoint.  There are many mechanical variations to account for.  We are still looking for different tools that might help with this.

Hope this helps (at least answer the question).

  • Anne-

I know that CXIs have been a bit of a problem.  I am about to use 30 CXIs and want to toss out an option I am considering, will you please give me your opinion.

Assuming that I do not want to use the Color Picker with the CXIs.  Can I do the following?

I use the wybron provided color wheel that basically splits the scrolls into 22 Frames with % (similar to the Iphone App)

Is it possible to create a personality like this to manipulate the CXI-

    Attribute 1-Dimmer

Attribute 2- Front Scroller w/22 Frames that each correspond to the Wybron Percentages.

Attribute 3- Back Scroller w/22 Frames that each correspond to the Wybron Percentages.

    Attribute 4- Fan Control

Basically I want to be able to call the CXIs to my programmers like this.

"Channel 1-20 at full, Front Frame 3, Back Frame 19."

    or

"Channel 1-20 at full Front Scroll at 68%, Back Scroll at 22%"

    Would something like this work?

A friend of mine who is not working on the project suggested that he has had success using a translator from percentages to Raw DMX Values (0-255), He uses the EOS CXI Library, but when the LD calls for the front string to be at a percentage he uses a conversion sheet to to tell the console to put the front scroll at 255 (when the LD says full for example)

I guess my other option is to patch the CXIs old school all as "dimmers" (except I don't think I can make them independent any more can I?)

What would you do..... (other than use the color picker : )

Thanks for all you hard work on the console.

  • A few thoughts from a design perspective:

I've found the color picker isn't totally useless for CXI's -- the hue tends to be fairly close, but the saturation is very low.  Though the CXI's don't match the CP's swatches, they do respond nicely tho the hue and saturation encoders.  I usually call for a gel color as a staring point, ask to dial up the saturation, then adjust the hue so the stage color matched my "mind's eye" color.  I do this to some extent when calling up a color using Wybron's percentages, and for me being able to just name a swatch in the right color family, then tweaking, is much faster than hunting through a cheat sheet.

The Wybron gel swatch color wheel shows just percentages, not frames, so if I were using that as a starting point a % to DMX conversion would be useful.  I could even be persuaded to write those values on the color wheel.  Having a color palette for each percentage could be a useful way to call up colors as well.

  •  Gentlemen.... thank you for your input.  The CXIs are actually on our discussion list for this week, so the feedback is timely.

    Thanks again!

  • I guess Raw DMX my be my best option at this point.-  I am getting out my pen to write on the wheel.: )
