turning off RDM

ION XE 2.7.4

I need to shut off RDM on my console. The user manual shows a different screen in the Shell than I see on my console. It shows RDM bullets where the speed is located however mine shows RDM in the Network tab under Interface Protocols.

I spoke with an ETC Tech Thursday regarding an issue I am having with a particular type of fixtures strobing the whole time the console is booted up and he thought there was also a way to disable RDM in the Setup portion when the show file is running. I could not find anything there however the manual shows it to be in Devices.

The tech told me if it is disabled in the shell then it is actually disabled however multiple people are telling me my issue seems to be RDM.

So can anyone please advise all the locations I should be able to disable RDM.

Please note: the console shows no strobe output on those fixtures and I have performed multiple tests, including seperating one of the fixtures and direct connect with short dmx cable to the console. It always strobes even though it receives all the proper commands like dimmer and color. When it is at full intensity the strobing is less obvious than when it is at 0 but it always strobes.

I am planning on contacting Tech support again sometime next week however I have pretty much decided I cannot use my XE console for this show due to time constraints. To be even more complicated: the fixtures work properly on my upgraded ION, they just strobe on my XE. Both consoles are using different software; XE more current however I am NOT going to upgrade my old ION as that is the console I will need to use for the show; cues Monday. I just won't have a backup console as my XE was going to be the primary and the upgraded ION the back up.

AND when I boot up my XE to a brand new unsaved show file with NOTHING patched those fixtures strobe at full speed. Nothing patched. Nothing Nothing Nothing. Someone told me when there is nothing patched then nothing is outputting through DMX except RDM and they felt that was the issue.

The tech was thinking more along the lines of a firmware conflict with the fixtures, which I tend to agree with however I still want to try the RDM disable first. it's currently disabled in the shell but I want to know if it is enabled anywhere else.

Thank you so much.

  • there are two places to switch off RDM if you use local DMX. if you're using ETC Net3 gateways then there is a third.

    - in shell, settings, network. there is a checkbox to uncheck
    - in setup, system, outputs. there is an RDM column to enable or disable RDM on your local outputs (this moved here in 2.7, but used to be in shell, settings, local I/O before)

for Net3 gateways you can deactivate RDM per port with the Net3 Concert software.
