Background values transferring between showfiles

So, I just got of the phone with a pissed off board op having run half a show with some background values on dimmers from a different showfile. A cue was running on the previous file while the next file was loaded. I realise that [Go to cue] [Out] is the way to go here, but why is that needed? Nothing from my Mamma Mia showfile should ever appear in Richard III.

Only reason I can think of is to make travelling between files with action/rehearsals on stage possible, without any harsh interruptions. Is that the case?

Would a simple “Refresh show data during show file load” on/off switch maybe be a solution? - If that makes any sense...

  • usually (at least in shows with only one cuelist) i will make sure that my one cuelist owns all parameters of all channels of that show. a parameter is owned by the cuelist that most recently sent a move instruction to that parameter.

so in that case, even if you have more channels patched than you need (e.g. because of repertory) all the channels needed will go to a defined state in the first cue (or even if you start with a different cue and use e.g. GotoCue 5 Enter).

if the moving lights i don't use in this show have pan/tilt values from the old show i don't care. if channels not used by the current show are still on your operator should be able to notice. or to make sure place an AllFade flag on the first cue.

i would consider it risky if some of my channels didn't have a value for some parameters just because they're at their home value anyway. i know that in regular playback you won't notice the difference. until someone changes the home preset. or as in your case someone forgets the GoToCue Out.

    1. Gotcha - thanks for sharing, Ueli. I’ll keep this all in mind.
