When the screen goes dark I wish a button press just woke up the screen/backlight and didn't actually perform whatever function it was programmed for. My cell phone is like this. For example if I start to write a text message, put the phone down for a bit which causes the screen to go dark, then go back to texting, the first button I push on the phone just makes the back light come back on so you can see where you were prior to the screen blacking out.
