Unable to "Install" GCE

I am fairly certain that this program is not intended for the console itself but rather a seperate laptop. That's the way NCE works, so I assume it is the same for GCE.

My rep actually demonstrated this to me yesterday, it appears in the shell under "General" once installed. Seems like it will be a cool utility, I just can't get it to install.

Hi guys.  You can run GCE from the Eos/Ion shell.  Try doing an uninstall first.  If you don't see an "Install" option after that, please ping tech support in Madison.  This has been forwarded to the network team as well.  You may be hearing from them shortly :-)

The uninstall first worked. Another question, I was told by my rep that the GCE is backwards compatible with NET2 nodes, however I can't see any of these products in the GCE.

Was I mis-told about these features or is this capability available in a hidden menu?

GCE is able to talk to Net3 two-port and four-port gateways operating in Net2 mode and change them over to Net3 mode and to configure them (as well as configuring Net3 Show Control and I/O Gateways).

To configure Net3 DMX gateways when they're running in Net2 mode and to configure ETCNet2 nodes, you'll want to use the ETCNet2 Configuration Editor (NCE).

Apologies for the gymnastics you found yourself undertaking to install GCE 1.0 onto your console.  At this point, we're not recommending installing that version onto consoles for just the reasons you encountered.  There's nothing wrong once you get it there, but the process of installing is less than desirable and stopping in the middle could have some unexpected effects.  We're working on the issue and when we release the next version, I hope installation should be a bit more traditional.

Meanwhile, as Brian noted above, you can always install GCE onto a standalone pc and configure gateways using that way.

Can you advise where the install button is in the Eos/Ion shell? Or how to go about installing GCE?

As a Mac user, this is a feature I've been waiting for for a long time.  Having to use a laptop to configure your network is one thing, but then having to deal with virtual XP machines and associated problems just makes it a headache that isn't needed.  If it can't be an internet browser based config utility, then having it on the console is the next best thing.

I may well be totally wrong but I think you just go to software updates in the shell and then select GCE from your stick.

I’ve not tried this yet but hope it works.

Thanks Nick. Yes, that is how you do it.

However, I have since learned from Luke that you have to install it twice, because the 1st install removes some services that are required.  After that, it worked fine.  Evidently GCE is being installed in the 1.5 shell by default.  Although I have to say it is not there as of Build 39.

Kevin, just so you know, the install issue is going to be addressed in an upcoming release of GCE.  Just so everyone is aware, some of the tools in GCE are already in the Eos shell.  So, when you go to run the installer, it see parts of GCE installed and assumes you want to uninstall it.    This is the reason tech support is discouraging the installation.  As long as you uninstall and immediately run the installer again, it works fine.
