DMX-in on the ION

You could just set up a node to be a dmx input and set up priorities for each source. Also they would normally be htp over the network, so if you just had the set of channels you wanted at zero at your Ion, then run the lights with the other console, I think that would accomplish the same thing. Now, I know the console is capable of Artnet, but I do not know if it will allow a merge situation.

I work on movies and sometimes it is better for me to be by the camera then at the board. I was thinking that I could use a laptop and some dmx dongle (like grandma 2 port node, lan box, hog widget) to feed a few channels in to the ION. Recording all the values in one place (ion) is important if we ever have to come back and reshoot a scene. I'll look into doing it by running client software on my laptop, if it's not to cramped, I suppose I can get the dongle from the rental house.

I might jump back to the trusty expression 3x for the upcoming gig. I am really trying to like the ion but it is just not happening for me.

Do you not like to use the wireless remote?

I use the client on my laptop often while on stage setting stuff up or focusing. I also use the x-keys pro plugged into my laptop mapped to all the same keys as my Ion, so I can get around it quickly. Sounds like you would not have enough room for the x-keys, but the laptop would certainly be a good way to do it with the client.

That sounds like you're actually after the Client functionality.

You can either use a laptop with dongle running Client (your rental house will definitely have a Client dongle), or you can use a second Ion console.

Either way, this basically gives you a 'remote facepanel' with full functionality, and everything saved back to the main Ion.

a remote focus unit would work too....

Thanks for all the feed back and suggestions. I guess I am just used to doing my way, typically with a lan box lcx plugged into the dmx in on an expression. Your suggestion will also get me the same results.
