Feature Request: Limited Wireless Client

I know it’s not supported, but it should be!  Maybe more technical minds can discuss possibilities.  This is something a lot of fellow Programmers / Board Ops in Local 52 are trying to work around right now.  There is an increasing need to have full Magic Sheet control with a walk around laptop on set.

LED, Wireless, and new technology keep showing up on sets, with the demand to be able to control it in fast paced temporary setups.  Sometimes the Board Op is the only person on the crew who can troubleshoot a set, whether it is wired or wireless, on stage or location.  Some Gaffers don’t know how to address an LED, don’t read plots or channels, speak vaguely, and just point.  The fast pace of the setups creates a situation where the lights brought to set are never in order.  There is often a wireless component to speed up the setups.  The console is never on set, sometimes not even near it.  Multiple rooms in a stage or location are being lit simultaneously.  The rigging crew plugs in conventional dimming in no particular order because it’s fastest.  Some stage rigs have hundreds of practical dimming.  All this leads to Magic Sheet interaction being imperative.

It is helpful to know that in 99% of setups our lighting is static.  Could this help to get around the need for such large file transfers to and from the Master?  There are only one to two Magic Sheets usually being referenced at a time, or edited on the fly.   Instead of operating as a Client, maybe it works in a more limited capacity for sending data.  Or maybe it operates like a beefed up version of an OSC Remote with Magic Sheet Access.  "Limited Wireless Client."

I rely on OSCRFR and iRFR daily and it has been a major game changer.  Having the entire console wireless on a laptop has been even better.  I now do this every time during the prep of a rig.  I log in as a Master when the rest of the company doesn’t have all their Wifi clogging the airspace, and it works great for my needs.  On shoot days I go back to the dimmer room coat closet where they hide the console on most stages.

During shooting, most people achieve the wireless client by first using a wired client off the existing console, then operating that from another laptop with a Screen Sharing App on the same wifi.  It would be great to skip the middle man and have it integrated with EOS.

Please discuss!

  • One of the things I hate about Magic Sheets is that they're graphic representations. I prefer Direct Selects because it's just data and I can use them on my RFR. Add in a few Macros for functions like Patch, and I can do almost everything via RFR. (Except receive feedback data.)

I know you're set in your ways with Magic Sheets, but would the ability to configure Custom Direct Select pages for the RFR be helpful?

Have you tried hooking a router up to the primary and using a laptop with a dongle as your wireless client?

  • Not really. I use DS and Macros for many things.   But Most people are creating an entire lighting plot as an interactive Magic Sheet. Imagine lots of practical Dimming, with swing sets changing left and right.  Most Riggers plug in random channels be because it’s the shortest quickest way.  I would soft patch everything so that it made sense on a Plot, but nobody would be able to troubleshoot it when a set wall got pulled or a set dresser unplugged a lamp. If the Electricians don’t understand a dimmer vs a Channel I have to work with what I’ve got.

  • Yes I have.  Not officially supported by ETC.  It doesn’t hold.  It will download the showfile, which can take a while.  It works for a time, but then disconnects and spends quite a long time trying to re-download the entire showfile and re-sync.  This has been on an open stage where I was pretty much the only WiFi around, using a Unifi AP. Have you had better luck?  I’m open to other suggestions, but if that was in good conditions there is no way that would work when a full company shows up with all their Carts’ WiFi.

  • Have you had better luck?

I've never tried using a wireless client. I just have ethernet cables that drop down to various places around the stage.

  • Ah yes, this I do as well.  It's the next best thing.  But still looking for the total wireless solution with the wired Primary.

  • You can't be everywhere at once.  At some point they need to hire a rigging programmer or DMX techs.  Until then I'd suggest getting pre-calls, building out your wireless network, a wireless nomad and rfr as well as utilizing direct selects more.  For instance I'll do a magic sheet for each general stage but all of that data is also organized in direct selects.  I do a 10x10 grid with each type left to right and sub groups or areas vertically beneath that.  Additionally DS allow you to label each of these groups dynamically way faster and easier than a magic sheet will allow.  So on one of your open grids making a rough DS magic sheet is much faster and useful than a true graphic representation.

  • Thank you for reaching out. Since this post is quite old by now and workflows change, please let us know if this would still help your current workflows. If so please bring this over to the Feature Request forum.
