Confused Masters

Today we were happily running our RPU as master in the control room, an EOS as the backup, with 2 RVIs and an ION running as clients (syncing with the master), connecting to the network through the switch in the back of the EOS. At teabreak we Unplugged the 2 RVIs from the network, and reconnected them through an 8 port unmanaged switch going into the switch in the EOS. This was to free up ports on the back of the EOS to plug in a show control gateway.

The gateway appeared to work fine, but despite not touching the link between the RPU and the EOS, the EOS decided that it was now the master, and so the RVIs and ION could not sync until reconnected to the 'new' master.

Any ideas as to why this happened?

  • Ben, we think Brent is probably right.  And it would only take a second or two to force the backup to take over.   We will setup some tests here, but it would be interesting (if you have a couple of minutes), to unplug and replug that unmanaged switch and see if there is any impact on the current master....??

    thanks much!
