2 dmx accessories, 2 lamps, 1 dimmer

I want to buy some DMX iris kits.  They would go in two lamps that are two-fered together.

I'm running Ion 1.4.3, and will upgrade next month after an opera.

How do you normally do this, when consoles look at accessories attached to the lamp?

A typical situation is 1 DMX dimmer, with 1 dmx iris, 1 scroller etc attached to it with different DMX addresses.

You talk to a lamp, and can talk to its Beam, Colour, etc functions.

I want to have 1 DMX Dimmer two-fered to 2 lights, with 2 DMX irises (with separate addresses) and have individual control of both irises.

Too much to ask?  Thoughts

Thanks.

  •  You could patch the irises as different parts of the same channel.

    For example:
    Address 60 (lamps) @ channel 20
    Address 452 (iris 1) @ channel 20 part 2
    Address 453 (iris 2) @ channel 20 part 3
(Insert your actual addresses of course)

This would give you independent control of the irises on the encoders while still controlling the lamps together.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi Chris.

This is from a very old thread.

I tried to patch 2 theoretical gobo rotators to 1 instrument.

I'd like to have 2 DMX iris units in 2 S4 hard patched to 1 dimmer.

Only 1 rotator showed up on the encoder page.

I couldn't find a DMX Iris unit, either from apollo or City theatrical (the 2 manufacturers I know about), in the library.

The suggestions made in this thread didn't pan out for me :-(

Any other thoughts? (Other than addressing the Iris units as "dimmer" via an address?)

    Thanks.

  • when you had the two irises patched, did you try controlling them individually via the channel part?  I expect that you can only get one encoder per device type at a time.

You could try patching the second iris as a slightly different device, even maybe a copy of the real profile with a different name.

Also, since you want to control them individually anyway you could put the second one in another channel.  In that case though, I would a patch a fake intensity address to the channel mirroring the intensity of the first- so the automarking stuff would work the same.

Hope that gets you closer to a good solution.

    oops- meant rotators for irises.
