Remote Paging Thoughts

As  the resident ALD at a major regional theatre, I have the opportunity to work with a whole bunch of varied designers - most (if not all) of whom have been using the ETC Obsession for years. Since we've switched to the EOS/ION (ION right now, EOS to come next year I think) - all of them have invariably been frustrated with the fact that they have to manually page their own channel screens.

Now personally, as a young designer comfortable in "thinking" the way the ION does, I love the ability for the designer to have their remote monitors configured differently from that of the board operator. I think it is infinitely flexible and the way of the future - BUT, and this is a big but, all these designers (old and experienced hands) just aren't used to it and do get frustrated when they say to the operator "page down" and I or the board op has to explain to them (hopefully before tech) how this works.

There is inevitable fumbling for the keyboard and time lost - especially during tech, where they want to see something spread-sheeted in blind and I often have to move over to the other side of the tech table and hit the right F-Key on the keyboard to go to spreadsheet view for them. Most designers honestly want to tell the operator "blind last cue and go to spreadsheet" and see that on their consoles - not to have to do it themselves when all they want to do is look at the stage.

My question is wouldn't it be fairly easy to include an OPTION in desk setup that would allow designers to see exactly what the board-op sees on his/her channel screens (at least formatting and paging - so if on the ION, our board op has direct selects open, the designer wouldn't have to see those). Heck, give us more options, so we can choose exactly which functions will be duplicated on the designer's monitor and which won't. I understand that for some people/setups, this would actually be more of a hinderance than a help, but for a certain generation of lighting designers, I think this would alleviate much frustration.

  • I agree with you completely. This is one of the first things I asked about when we got our EOS. I thought at one time there was talk of a "mirror" state between the console and the design table. I guess there are a lot of higher priority fixes. I still have designers that keep saying "page up' and "page down" and I have to keep saying "that's you". Most are ok with it, though for some it really annoys.

Remember the two button boxes that would plug into the keyboard input of Obsn remotes? Those boxes allowed the designers to page around on their own. Paul Gallo used one. I have the big x-keys that I let the designer use. You can get a smaller version x-keys that could have a very limited subset of commands for the designer that would be easy to navigate.

There still should be a mirror option for the designers who want it though.

  • I've had the opportunity to use the Ion as and LD and the Eos as an ALD.

As an ALD, I was able to manage the displays quite a bit with the mouse.  What did get a little tricky was that switching tabs could change the Live/Blind mode.  I would forget, for example, that the Playback Status Display would switch the command line to live, or the Sub list would switch to blind, and mess up programming.  I wish there was a way to lock out any actions that would affect the command line.

Even in a hypothetical mirrored mode, the ability to adjust tombstone size would be a plus, as well as the ability to switch tabs, have unique flexi-views, and scroll up and down lists.  Some sort of paging priority would also be great, so that a page command sent from the RVI would only page the RVI, while a page command from the main console would affect both.  As they do now, they would sync up with a channel selection.

  • Hi Josh

I'm pretty certain if you want to have a mirrored display, set your user ID on the RVI to the same as the console user ID,  You should then have the same command line and same displays.

    Cheers. BFJ

  • That's not how it works, sorry - if you set the user IDs the same, you get to see the command line, but the channel screen layout and paging (amongst other things) is STILL seperate. That's what my whole thought/question is about.

  • NP. Just wanted to be clear and all.
