DMX issues with the ION

OK, so we got the ION and it was working great until Monday when we added a Fiber Optic drop to the light plot and upgraded the software of the ION to the newest version, and thats when half of our lights started chasing themselves. We called ETC tech support spent hours on the phone with them, they had us reinstall the old version, and reboot the board. Once that was all done we fired everything back up and got no lights. So ETC support said that our DMX port coming out of the ION crashed and that they would ship us a loner board and to ship our board back for repairs. Well I still had to write cues for a show that was openning on Friday, so I hooked up our old Express 250 and all worked fine, except that we didn't have the time to patch in our Revolutions. This afternoon, I hooked up the loaner ION which ETC sent, and bam, same problem the same lights that were chasing themselves again. Now I am convinced that it must be something in the newest version of the ION software because the problem did not happen when we used the Express.

Has anyone had this problem? Can someone offer solutions???

  • I used to run a older light console with the same rig for years and had no problems until I got the Ion. After I upgraded I ran into a situation like that just before the start of a show. I tracked it down and found that one of my LED pars was feeding back strange DMX data into the system. I put a DMX terminator on the last fixture in the chain and all was well. If you don't already use a DMX terminator, it may be worth a try. I do shows all around the Northwest and now I carry several of each with me. They have solved a lot of data issues. If you don't have one you can make one cheap. Get a male XLR connector, either 3- or 5-pin, solder a 120Ω resistor across pins 2 and 3. Plug it into the output connector of the last DMX fixture in the chain. Good luck
