RFR and v 2.0 update

If you have not upgraded your RFR to 2.0 yet, and can live without the networkable base station, I recommend waiting.  Both of mine are now only functional while plugged into USB power.  The tech support guys are stumped and say they're seeing it with other units besides mine.  One of mine is in ETC hands right now.

The units power-cycle continuously when the battery drops (or *thinks* it drops) below a certain level.  It is apparently not fixable by downgrading, either.

Just a heads-up.   I have full faith in the awesome ETC tech support people that it will be fixed soon!

  • Many customers have reported significant improvement with RFR v2.0 software.

If you have a full battery charge (charge it overnight), how long does the unit work before it starts to reboot? We will test this on the RFR you returned.

    Thanks,

  • Bob V. is working on mine right now - yesterday, the RFR I still have had a full charge at the start of the day and never really dropped any battery level until it fell asleep, then when it woke back up, the battery level was 2 pixels high and it was rebooting.  There is something seriously broken with the power management in both of my RFRs.  I wrote a small novel detailing the troubleshooting I did with both units, and included it with my RFR.  Bob probably has it.

  • Hey Guys,

rebooting constantly sounds like a hardware problem. Could you please contact ETC Tech Services to see about having your Handheld sent in for repair.

  • We had the same problem with ours when I upgraded to 2.0.  Had to send it back to ETC, they sent us a replacement.

I'm having 2 issues with the replacement:

First, On the replacement the screen seems to be brighter in some parts than others.  I would estimate that majority of the screen is running at 75% while the area where the battery indicator is and everything right below the battery are running at 100%.

I e-mailed ETC about this a week or so ago and haven't heard back.

Here's a very blurry picture that kind of shows the problem.  It's much more noticeable in real life than the photo makes it look.

Second problem I've noticed is if I turn off the RFR when it's in park mode, some times when I turn it back on the display will read Live, but it will respond to commands as if it's in Park still, for example the Rem-Dim button will produce an error.

I have noticed this problem (RFR screen shows "live" but responds as if in "park") as well on our RFR v2.0 with networked base station.

I am also having the problem with the constant reboot at low battery level- same symptoms as nfarwell.  For now I just use used batteries leftover from our  wireless mics to keep the RFR running.

  • I called ETC on Thursday to see the status of the one RFR in repair and they said it was in testing with a new version of the software.  I really hope testing goes well as the one I'm using in tech right now has started rebooting randomly even while plugged into USB power.  I really need a working remote - the one I still have is not wireless anymore and is not very functional.

  • My RFR is now on it's way back to me and I will then play with the beta and give a report.

(note:  when the customer is calling every day asking if it's done yet and telling you his only other RFR is not functioning while in tech rehearsals, shipping back the repaired RFR via GROUND is not conducive to low customer stress)

  • Software version 2.0.11 seems to fix the battery/power/rebooting issue.  I got back a surprise new RFR (with an integral belt clip!  Thanks!) with the new software and then my other repaired one a few days later.  So far, it works.  Thanks guys.

  • This software will be released in the next few days.

  • Is there a hardware change?  The belt clip on my RFR is screwed on, not a permanent attachment.

I am eagerly awaiting the new software to see if it fixes the rebooting problem, becuase I haven't been able to find downtime to send our RFR in for service.

  • Call tech support. I called yesterday and they explained the problem and sent me files for downgrading the RFR to original specs.

They also explained a procedure for allowing the RFR to get a full charge running the version 2 software which seems to be working.

I am going to try the next version of software which is supposed to address this issue before I restore to the original software.

  • I gave up on the temporary fix for the version 2 software. It never did seem to take a charge. Endless rebooting after a few minutes on.

So I reinstalled the original software and all is well. I haven't found the need to use the basestation on the network so far anyway.

Does the newest RFR software offer any additional functionality besides the ability to put the basestation on the network?

  • No additional functionality which outweighs the rebooting problem that I can find.  Wait for the 2.0.11 update.

I had two very early RFR without the belt clips - so to get one of the newer ones is a nice bonus!

  • One of my RFRs has started the rebooting again.  Good thing the show closed yesterday!

  • Can you please contact Matt Kerr in Tech Support??

Thanks much.... are you networking this RFR or is it connected via USB?

    a

  • USB connected.  I went through the exciting and complicated process of upgrading my GCE, then upgrading the RFR, then testing yesterday.  I will see if it reboots anymore today with 2.0.2 installed.  Both still had the 2.0.11 installed by service.  On a side note, can the RFR update notifications go out via the registered product email list?

Will the RFR update ever get easier?  Like, standalone?  Using GCE still seems clunky (and the phone support guys anonymously agree).

  • Question about the RFR - is it just me or did I used to be able to hit "channel 25 at enter" in live mode and have it take the channel out?  It doesn't seem to do that anymore.  I know I can do "at 00" or "at out" but my muscle memory is pretty strong from spending 60% of my RFR time in Park so I can access addresses.
