first time user on ion

i currently have an etc insight 3 with designers graphic tablet and a radio focus remote,i have purchased a ion with two touchscreens and two  2x20 fader wings and the radio remote which are all still in the boxes,(due to a seven day a week programme in the theatre at the moment)i have been keeping a close eye on the forum to see any potential problems or should i say minor bugs,my question is how much fun am i going to have learning this desk and is it going to make my live considerably easier in programming time as the desk is to run 210 dimmers,6 mac 250,6 mac 300,2 mac 250+,6 mac 250 wash,8 led battens in 6 channel mode soon to change to 48 ch mode as i now have the channels available,18 chroma q scrollers, low fogger,2 haze machines, the only reason i upgraded was due to the fact i had ran out of control channels,if i had bought an expression there is channel upgrades available but not for the insight 3,  when i bought the desk i did not know i would have this amount of equipment at my disposal in such a short time so never thought of this potential problem,i read somewhere on the forum that if you can programme a strand desk then there is a familiar programming logic, well they made all the strand desks 1 mile from my place of work until 2 years ago and i opted for an arri then the insight 3 so dont have a clue about programming a strand desk

  • Yes I believe it will be lots of fun once you get the hang of it. I agree, start with the cheat sheet. Two things however that  I dont think are on the cheat sheet, sneak=release I for me one of the first thing I do on a new ion show is set my default sneak time to 0 or 1. Also GOTO Cue OUT. When you are recording pallets and setting up the desk this  will take you to a zero state and make life better. Both of these are on the cheat sheet and well I did not have the cheat sheet when I used the desk for the first time but those are the two things I wished I new for my first day of programing.

For what it's worth I had spent ten years mostly on Expression based boards and have had about 9 months on the ION. Even if all I had was an I-Q I would now prefer an EOS based console over the Expression based system.

  • I have two suggestions for you as a new programmer to the desk. One is to learn the syntax of the desk. And two, learn how tracking works, since you are coming from a preset style console. If I were to give you a third it would be to know what GoTo Q out and GoTo Q 0 do. And when to use them.
