Working with presets / "scenes"

Using an EOS, I would like to be able to recall a "scene" (stage look) with one direct select button press.  I tried to use a preset, but the channels must be selected first (via group or keypad) before the preset is applied.

This has come up lately when a designer has set up a bunch of cyc looks by mixing conventional cyc lights (patched as individual channels, not fixtures).  To recall them, it takes two button presses: the "CYC" group direct select and then the preset direct select that corresponds to the desired look.

It would be great to have a "scene" direct select that combines the group selection, intensity and NIP information (and possibly timing as well) into one record target.

Any thoughts?

  • while discussing this, it brings up a feature I like on another console who's name I will not be mentioned for fear of accusations of disloyalty to the ETC brand.

with no channels selected, press the preset direct select once, and it selects (puts in gold) all the channels that are in that preset. Press the same preset again, and it puts all of those selected channels into the preset.

Maybe something like this is on its way in 1.5 as I saw mention that the direct selects will now grey out if you have a channel selected, but it is not in some direct select palettes.

    .

We can do this already by just placing Group on the command line before hitting the Direct Select.

Is it a problem to use Group before hitting the direct select?

  • A feature in 1.5 (the upcoming) is [Sneak] [Direct Select].  This equals the current command line instruction, e.g.:  [Recall From] [Intensity Palette] [1] [Sneak] [Enter].    That'll help.
