Funky color cross fades with RGB Lights.....

I was wondering if any one could help me with this.....

I have programed our cyc for an upcoming production as two RGB custom fixtures and am able to use the color picker and gel picker to choose cyc colors on traditional fixtures. Very cool and impressive to all who walk over an see me click a color to have it appear on the cyc. Even the audio guy said ohh cool.

However the problem is when cross fading between some colors I get odd other colors.

For instance, When fading from light blue to pink (R2, G55, B100 or H207, S98, B100) to Pink (R40 G.4 B20 or H329, S99, B40) It fades through dark blue? Dark blue not so bad since it does not pull focus.

However in another scene I have a 10s color fade from a blue(ish) (R1, G12, B100 or H233, S99, B100) to a dingy amber (R54, G64, B32  or H79, S50, B64) and in that fade the whole cyc goes through green for 2 sec not so attractive.

I think I saw on this forum something about Hue Sat vs RGB color mixing.... How do I force this custom fixture to crossfade in RGB? or can I creat some sort of curve to fix this... if so how?

To be thourough I am using L106, L119 & L189 as my RGB Colors and running ver 1.4.5.9.0.5

Thank you all for the help!

PS I have had the same issue with RGB LED just never when I had time to fix it or get help.

  • For now, as a quick fix, you can put a delay on the Green parameter. I realize that this is not a global fix, but it can keep you fading to an unattractive green on a case by case basis.

    Hope that helps.

  • OK yea I can do that and while doing that I have found how to on a cue by cue bases get the fixture to run in RGB mode instead of HSB mode. However there has to be an easier way to do it that I don't know about. Because right now I am having to manually add a R or G or B value to each cue for each fixture to force the light into RGB mode (and then crossfade in RGB instead of HSB)

So upon further tinkering my question is can I globally or in a range of cues force a fixture from HSB to RGB?

  • Randall, in 1.5 we've added (are adding?) a button to the Color Picker to toggle the values between their native controls and HSB.  So, the way you WILL be able do this is to:

Go to blind.  (I like to work in spreadsheet for this stuff).

Select your cue range.  Cue n thru enter, where n is the first cue in the list will select the entire range.

Select your channel range.    And then you'll (be able to) hit the color format button to toggle between.

We have several things in planning post 1.5 that will help with this in perhaps a more streamlined manner.

    Hope this helps.

  • In the mystical 1.5 you'll find a little button in the colour picker display called Colour format which will toggle your colour information between CMY/RGB and HSB. That should help you out in this instance.

  • Darn it, don't you just hate it when someone beats you to it!!
