I'm pretty used to setting up straight plays but have musical coming up. I would like to make some lighting effects that respond in time to the music. Where would I start to look at home to do this please?

There are two windows / macOS apps which allows to analyze sound and sending OSC data:

Many bands works with a click track from Logic / Ableton ... this software allows to send Timcode (MSC, SMPTE) or OSC data which can processed by the console.
Oh. This will be an entirely different project for me but looks very interesting. I have used OSC to 'talk' to my Lighhack (we run ELE2) but never used it for music cues so may need some help there. Do you know if these or other music analyzers run under Linux?
Sorry, with Linux I can' help you.
