Ion controlling SFX 5.6?

Hi all,

So I have searched through pretty much everything I could find on midi, Ion and SFX.  What I am basically trying to do is trigger SFX 5.6 using the Ion.

I do realise that it can make more sense to have the Ion as the slave and SFX controlling it, however, some shows (like the current one) only have 10 sound cues and 225 lighting cues.  I would rather find a way to trigger the 10 sound cues via midi from the console to SFX 5.6 instead of putting MSC triggers into SFX and dealing with it all that way.

From what I have found here, it mentioned that as long as the "LIST" and "CUE" were the same, they would trigger together or something like that.  However, SFX 5.6 has Letters (A, B, C etc) for its list ID instead of numbers.  Does anyone know if it is possible to change the SFX list ID in version 5.6?  Or is this only possible in version 6.x?

What about sending Midi time code commands to SFX 5.6 to trigger the sound cues?  Is this possible??

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

  • [Disclaimer - I don't know SFX - and I'm not really a console programmer - but maybe I can help!]

The first step is to check the software version on your Ion. There were some issues with Midi show control in earlier versions, so if you're not updated already, I would upgrade your console to 1.4.5 software, available from the website.

I took a look for information on Midi and found : http://www.stageresearch.com/products/SFX6/MIDI.aspx. This applies to SF6 but hopefully it works in 5.6 as well.

I think what you need to look at is using Midi Show Control (MSC) commands to trigger SFX. I see in the screenshot on that page that SFX can recieve MSC commands. When you hit 'GO' on your Ion, it ouputs a MSC "Go" command, which has information on which cue has just 'gone'. You should be able to link a 'go' command on MSC to firing a command in SFX.

    Hope that helps..
