DMX speed

I'm not sure if this question has been asked before or not.  I've looked in the manual and couldn't find an answer.

Is there a way to change the DMX output speed of the ION console without exiting to the shell?

Some Dimmers (Strand 20k) flicker/pulse occasionally when receiving DMX at the fastest setting.  Exiting to the shell is a major inconvenience if I have to shut down to make a change to the DMX speed setting.

Thanks

M Weeks

  • No, there isn't, as it's a console hardware setting that you shouldn't need to change more than once.

Also, you're unlikely to notice the difference between Maximum and Medium unless you're controlling extremely fast devices such as strobes.
With dimmers, tungsten loads and many mechanical units, you probably won't even see the difference between Maximum and Slow because of the thermal inertia of the lamps and the inertia of the moving parts.

So as you've seen this problem more than once, you may as well set it to Medium and leave it there.

  • I'm only answering for M Weeks because I've had the problem myself. He/She's not talking about perceiving the refresh rate, it's about flaws in the receiver/processor design of the DMX device being controlled. And the issue is that when a road or rental device shows up at 9AM and there's a show that night, you need to change the output speed right away, preferably without giving up part of your lunch hour to reboot the console! And if some house, or frequently-present equipment runs better at the old setting, you have to go back to that setting later.

  • I've never found any devices that don't run at a slower DMX speed than whatever is needed to stop it missing frames, hence my suggestion of simply using the happy medium.

In other words, I've never seen a device that works fine at Maximum but doesn't work at Medium, while the inverse is (unfortunately) fairly well known.

I'd be interested to hear about any devices you've found that don't work on the Medium setting but do on Maximum, as that would imply a very strange receiver design and it would be interesting to take a look it.

Finally, you're highly unlikely to do this more than once for a given show, and it's not an operator preference that may change when you hand the show over to the show op. So it makes perfect sense for it to be in the same place as changing console IP and network services, which you're also only going to do once for a given show (if that often!).
