Depends on what type of effect you wanna build. Motion, color, etc. Press effect effect to open the effect menu (on Eos) then pick one of the canned effect or type a new effect # to create your own. Then goto live type chnl then effect # to start the effect, then you can effect effect again to adjust that effect live.
not sure what you are meaning here. Effects are channel independent for the most part and as such you have to assign them to channels in order to see what they look like. I can't think of a way to "test" and effect without applying it to channels. Getting in and out of the effect editor is a quick procedure so I'm not sure where you can pick up any time saving with a different method.
You can make it a bit quicker by creating the effect from Live -
[Live] [1] [Thru] [6] [Effect] [4] [2] [Enter]
It
will ask you what type this new effect should be, and it will already
be running it when you get to the editor. This works best with Relative
and Absolute effects, but would also work with Step-Based effects. With
Step-Based, it will put your Live selection into step 1 for you.
I believe at least on Ion I heard while in live if you hit effect enter while the effect is running the size and so forth are mapped on the encoders. Havent tried it yet, I just remember hearing that recently.

I'll have to give that a try first thing on Monday (or maybe Tuesday if Bell is late installing my new dish and Internet service). I'll report back here on the results.
On both Eos and Ion, effect enter will stop the last effect that you applied. To edit effects live, open the Effect Status Display. Select the effect. The encoders now route to controls such as rate, size, horizontal and vertical form.... changes applied in the effect status display are stored with the cue, but do not impact the base effect. From the effect status display, you can press [Edit] - this takes you into a live editor for the rest of the effect.
