ION (and Element) monitor problem

We bought a new Element a few months back, and with it two Planar LCD monitors.  A few weeks back one monitor just stopped, and I assumed it had gone bad but haven't had time to test it.  It still powers up, but shows no signal from the console.  In the Element shell I have selected both monitors.

Soooo...I updated my ION to 1.8, and promptly experienced the same behavior and failure of the other LCD.  I can go into the shell and select both monitors, but Identify only lights up a number on one of them.  For a while the console acted like it had two monitors, allowing the mouse to slide off and only showing half of the displays, but then it seems to have given up on the other monitor.

Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing?  A trick to the update?

I also can't exit either console directly to the shell anymore - exiting only gives me the shutdown option, and the only want to enter the shell seems to be during the boot process.  I'm guessing that's another option hidden away?

Thanks in advance.
