You are asking if the mouse/trackball can be used to set intensity?  Nope!  It is either a pointing device, or when enabled, used to control pan/tilt.

I'm not exactly sure what the OP was asking, but it would be nice if a mouse or trackball's scroll wheel could be used as an intensity wheel rather than zoom.  Maybe that could be an option?  The scroll wheel could function as an intensity wheel normally and when pressing the Format key, change to zoom control.  Or something like that...
