VL1000 Shutter issue

We're currently in production for a show, and came across a rather odd problem while trying to create a box on stage.

We adjusted the shutters to where they needed to be, then recorded the result - at that point, the shutters we'd adjusted moved. The values did not change on screen, but undoing returned the shutters to where they should be. We tried using the direct selects (virtual), and typing in the preset number. Recording and updating - all with the same result that the change happened when the record/update command was issued.

We are running Software V1.7 (1.8 was taken off the website at the point we wanted to update), and I'd rather not take the chance of doing the software update now the show has been programmed. Does anyone have any idea what caused this - or more usefully, a workaround?

Cheers,

Dave

  • Is it possible that the shutters are being affected by the levels in another cue or submaster?  Try recording your shutter setup without any other cues or subs playing back on stage, and see if that works.  If it does, then you might have a sub or cue running that (unknown to you) has the shutter parameters recorded into it, and it is affecting your shutters on a LTP basis.

  • Dave, we have heard instances of this, but have not been able to reproduce it in the lab.

A question for you.  Was this a new showfile created under your current software release?  Or was it an older showfile created on a previous build?

What build are you running.  If it was an older file, it would be good to know what software the file was originally created with.

Can you email me your showfile (anne.valentino@etcconnect.com), with an answer to these questions.

Also, if possible, a reproducer.  Such as, when I'm editing cue x, channel y, I move the shutter encoder and see a jump of this much (I know that's a relative question, but it'll help us try to track it down).

Thanks very much for your help.

    Sorry about the problem.

  • I find it annoying that all the shutter angle encoders work backwards, that is if I am running the encoder clockwise the shutter moves counterclockwise on stage.  Is there any way to change this in the profile?  My apologies for taking this thread down a tangent.

  • Gregg,

In theory I think you should be able to invert the behaviour of the angle parameters by swapping the high/low values on the relevant parameters in the fixture editor.

However, last time I checked (admittedly some time ago) this didn't appear to work on virtualized parameters (so although you could invert the behaviour of the angle parameter on a Mac 2000 Performance where this is a native control, it doesn't work on units that have A/B shuttering - for example VL1000S, VL3500 etc)

If this still doesn't work (which it may well not!) then a temporary fix is to swap the A/B shutters for each blade in the fixture. This will cause the shutter to work 'backwards' - which as the fixture is built backwards, will cause the shutter to behave intuitively!

    Andi.

  • Just realised that I never really got back to anyone about this. My apologies - we haven't seen the problem again since upgrading, so I'm guessing it was sorted in other bug fixes/upgrades...

    Thanks all!
