Multiple Programmers with live vs. pre-viz

Is it possible to have two Ion's networked together and do the following? :

Have Ion A act as master which would run the show and output to the live environment while having Ion B, sharing the same file and synchronizing, output to a pre-visualization suite (via ArtNet)? The main idea being having the two Ions seamlessly exchange data back and forth without the need to manually partially re-import cues from Ion B to Ion A.

This is for a multi-designer dance show. The idea being that while one designer is teching his or her piece other designers can be tweaking cues, etc. in the pre-visualization suite.

  • That sounds like a nightmare! Would that not mean that the second console would be essentially outputting the same channel information to the pre-viz?

So your pre-viz would end up showing the 'live show' AND what ever 'offline' work was being done, and vice-versa, the live show would get conflicts from the 'offline' work.

Not sure that would be a pretty arrangement!

    Sorry to rain on that...!

  • What you want is to be able to output the LIVE to the stage and the BLIND to the Pre-Viz. To do so Consolle and Pre-Viz must talk to a higher lever protocol. I think there is only one desk that does this and it's made in Damimark ( actually it's made in Belgium but sell by a Danish Company )

  • I figured it's mostly a pipe dream but had to ask. I was hoping that maybe since Ion B would only be outputting ArtNet and not DMX that there might be a chance of it working.

  • First off, if I were teching the show, I'd be having each and every LD cue his/her show in separate cue lists. This way the SM for the piece is only required to worry about the fact that his/her first cue starts at 1, or whatever and with separate a cue list per piece, everybody can start at 1.  The console Op. then keeps track to make sure they are in the correct cue list for ea. piece, which is painless on Ion,

At that point you don't need the consoles slaved, you can pre-viz from a 2nd Ion with the LD only acting upon their cue list.

After everybody is done you can merge cue lists to a master file.  You can even selectively merge.

You are going to have to keep good tabs on what's most recent.
