Setting up PC Client on ION system

So Ive got my client dongle now, but whenever I start the ION Client s/w on the PC I get the message:

MultiConsole Error. Unable to start MultiConsole Networking Services.

I have used ETC Config Editor and I can see the gateway devices on the PC, so I know its actually on the network OK, but is there something else I am doing wrong?

V1.9.2.53b on the ION, RPU and offline/client s/w

Win 7 on the PC.

The drivers for the dongle appear to be correctly installed.

Is there a quick setup guide for IP addresses, Gateways, DHCP etc anywhere?

Hi Jim-

Can you:

Right-Click on My Computer, go to Manage
Go to Services, see if Service Location Protocol is running?

If not, start it and see if that makes any difference?

Luke,

Service location protocol was not running. Started it, but still getting the same error on Client Start. Not connected to console at the moment (in hotel), but I will try with the service running tomorrow. Any more thoughts?

Warren - thanks, I'll look at that tomorrow. Should I be using DHCP, or static IPs, or doesnt it matter? I prefer to use static IPs in a fixed install, but is that a problem? Do I need to specifiy the DNS Gateway?

What flavour of Windows 7 is this? Home or Professional?

I'm running 7 Professional (well, Enterprise) and have never seen this message! I'm not overly familiar with 7 yet, but I know that there were differences in what networking protocols were available between XP Home and Professional.

Your PC's IP address should be 10.101.1.101 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. If you do an ipconfig /all from a command prompt and post the results here, that might reveal something.

Win7 Professional here.
Would skype, but its not in your timezone when I get to work. Maybe in the afternoon? We just got WiFi, so now a possibility.
What should the ION and RPU IP/DHCP/Gateway settings be? I didnt set up the RPU, so there could be some conflict here?

Just check that any firewall is off on your ethernet connection, this stops the desk talking back to you (ie synchronising), and got me for 20mins a few weeks ago! As long as you're on the same subnet, your IP is within the same range and the firewall is off, you should be go for launch! If not, go for lunch?!

Ok, according to the info above IP Config the LAN is unplugged, but the WiFi is connected using a 192.186.x.x IP address, which won't have access to the Ion console/RPU assuming default IP settings.

So in the state as given above, it definitely won't work - though I',m guessing that was actually from in the hotel..

On site, are you trying to connect via WiFi or via a wired connection?

Under Windows 7 you cannot have the Gateway IP the same as the IP address, so use 10.101.1.1 for the Gateway. (this is different to how we recommend under WinXP)

What does ipconfig say when the ethernet connection is plugged in and WiFi turned off?

(Copy/paste it into Notepad or similar to get it here)

Thanks for the answers so far. I'll check it out further today.

Yes, sorry about the IPCONFIG info, I was doing it offline in the hotel, and obviously with no LAN connected. Clearly I am using the LAN, so I'll do another IPCONFIG dump later today with it connected.

Perhaps its just the firewall like Warren suggests, as I think I've got the IP settings OK.

Well I dont know what it was that made it work - re-checked all IPs, turned on the service protocol and turned off the firewall - couldnt set the user account, but anyhow, the client now works.

Its a bit confusing that you click 'start client' but it wont work initially until you go to troubleshoot and actually select the primary, but that wast the problem. I think the selection of the primary should be offered when clicking 'start client' maybe?

More client woes...

My PC is connecting succsesfully to the session, and the show is uploaded and the client mirrors the master.

If I turn of mirror mode, and attempt to do anything to the system on the client such as selecting groups, it does nothing.

If I select a group on the master, the client still reflects this, but nothing works in the Client->Master direction.

I am still getting the error 'Unable to start MultiConsole Networking Services' when I run the ION Client from the shell.

Any ideas anyone? Grrrr
